Emergency plumber in Indian Trail, NC: sorting out a burst pipe, a heater or a sewer backup
A pipe that burst, a heater that gave out or a backup in Indian Trail? Call (833) 571-0120 and describe it. Your first call may be to the utility, and which one depends on your street.
Indian Trail is about four miles from Matthews. This page is written from the Matthews side of the line, for people who need a plumber and a straight answer on who owns the problem.
Union County Water or Carolina Water Services: whose customer are you?
The Town of Indian Trail says Union County Water provides the majority of the town’s water and sewer, at 704-296-4210. Carolina Water Services of NC serves a small part of Beacon Hills and Crismark, at 1-800-525-7990.
Look at your last bill. The name on it is the utility to call about a main, a meter or a street leak. The plumber handles everything on your side of the meter.
| Where the problem is | Who handles it | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Main line, street or meter | Your utility, per your bill | Call the number above |
| Past the meter or inside the house | You | Call a plumber |
| A backup that continues after you stop using water | Start with your utility | Then a plumber if the main is clear |
| Heater, fixtures, drains in the house | You | Call a plumber |
A leak at the street versus a leak at the house
- Close the main shutoff valve inside the house and see whether the meter still moves.
- If the meter stops, the leak is inside, and you need a plumber.
- If the meter keeps moving with the main closed, the leak is between the meter and the house or at the meter.
- A wet patch near the meter box or the street is for your utility to inspect first.
- Call and tell us what the meter did.
The meter test is explained in full under how a meter test finds a hidden leak. Charlotte Water’s rule that customers pay for leaks beyond the meter is not a Union County statement, so ask Union County Water whether it offers a billing adjustment after a repair.
The water source changed in 2024: what that means for softeners and filters
Union County Water says its supply comes from the Catawba River and, since 2024, from Lake Tillery through the Yadkin River Water Treatment Plant. An older Union County report listed hardness at about 26 ppm at its Catawba River plant, which is soft, but that report predates the change.
Before you buy a softener or a filter, ask Union County Water for its current water quality report and look at the hardness figure. A salesperson who quotes a number should be able to show where it came from.

Heaters, repipes and the Union County permit rule
Union County Building Code Enforcement says permits are required for the addition or change in design of plumbing. It says replacing a water heater is generally exempt only if nothing changes in fuel, location, capacity or the routing of venting and piping.
A like-for-like swap fits that. A move from a tank to switching to tankless, or a whole-house repipe, may not. The page does not say whether Indian Trail applies this rule, so ask your plumber who issues permits for your address.

Call (833) 571-0120What to have ready when you call
- The utility name from your latest bill.
- Whether the main valve is closed and what the meter did.
- What failed: the heater, a pipe, a drain or a fixture.
- Photos of the damage or the label on the heater.
- Whether you have had a permit or work done on the system recently.

A clog that keeps coming back
One slow drain is a local clog and a cable usually clears it. A line that clogs again in a few weeks has buildup or roots that a cable did not remove. In that case ask for a camera look before paying for another visit.
High-pressure jetting cleans the wall of the pipe, and a camera first tells you whether the pipe can take it. If the camera finds a crack or an offset, the line needs a repair, not another cleaning.
Why the same pipe problem looks different from one street to the next
Houses on the same street can have different pipe materials, depending on when they were built and who plumbed them. A plumber can identify the material in minutes by looking at the pipe where it enters the house and at the heater. Ask what it is, and ask for a photo.
If it turns out to be a material with a known failure history, replacing aging supply lines is worth pricing before the next leak.
When the heater is the problem
A water heater that makes no hot water, leaks at the base or trips a breaker has a short list of likely causes. A leak from the tank body means replacement. A heater that only runs lukewarm may need a part.
Ask the plumber to show you what failed. The pages on repairing a tank heater and replacing a tank heater explain the choice, and the DOE puts the life of a storage tank at 10 to 15 years, which is a useful number when you decide whether to repair or replace.
